As we begin a new year, we like to do a little reflecting on the old one. three h.s. seniors off to universityIn the Fall of 2020, we had three violin students of Ms. Elly's who graduated high school and went on to prestigious universities. All of the faculty and their fellow group class students miss them, but are also proud of the kind, smart, talented, funny (all of them!) adults they became. Congrats and best wishes to Arvind, Keagan, and Tristan! Arvind Kalyan, currently studying Computer Science and Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles Keagan Holmes, currently studying Robotics and Intelligent Systems, minoring in Computer Science at Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany Tristan Cousin, currently studying multiple subjects at Franklin University, Lugano, Switzerland Winter recitals 2020December 6th, 2020 we had our final performances of the year. While it was a very different, and in some ways more challenging recital experience in 2020 making videos of our performances rather than playing live for an audience, there were advantages!
Pieces became extra polished from being able to re-record. Listening skills were enhanced from having to play with a piano accompaniment recording. Fun facts about each student were shown on their introduction slide. Family and friends from all over the world were able to watch with us and give positive feedback during the performances in the chat section. Beautiful music was enjoyed by over 70 people at each Zoom showing of our Winter Recital videos, although not all are pictured here.

On May 31st the San Diego Suzuki School of Music hosted its first ever virtual recital! Students spent a month putting together a polished at-home recording that they submitted for the recital day. Nearly seventy-five young musicians participated by sending in videos!
On recital day the faculty, students, and their families did a "watch party." We even had friends and family watching from across the country! Everyone used the online chat feature to cheer on their peers. We loved seeing how supportive the kids were! It was a unique and amazing experience. Thank you to all the families for putting in all your hard work to make this happen. Many SDSSM students and faculty had a lot of fun at this year's SD Suzuki Institute!
We got to play on a new stage this year at the San Diego County Fair! It was a tad smaller, but better location and enjoyed by all. Student Spotlight
The SD Suzuki School of Music started the year with organizing a five day workshop called Music Mind Games, which is a series of games designed by Michiko Yurko to teach music theory in a fun and engaging way. All of the faculty participated and on two days we had kid & parent classes to observe.
Photos from our Solo Recitals Performing in front of the International Cottages, then at the Grinch tree at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park has become a favorite for students and families alike. People arriving or leaving from attending the Grinch play enjoy our classical and holiday tunes, too!
